The monastery of Dionysiou

Dionysiou This, the fifth monastery in the hierarchy, is dedicated to the Birth of Ioannis the Baptist. It was founded by Saint Dionysios from Koresos near Kastoria in the period A.D. 1370-74. The great Alexios III Komnenos, Emperor of Trebizond, made large sums of money available to bring the building works to completion. The monastery was enlarged through grants by the Palaiologoi and, after the fall of Constantinople, by various rulers of the Danubian principalities.
