Konstamonitou monastery
Tradition has it that the monastery of Konstamonitou was a foundation of the 4th century A.D., and indeed
one by Constantine the Great - whence its name. Another version records as its founder a monk
from Kastamoni in Asia Minor. The first mention of the monastery, however, occurs in an 11th
century A.D. document. Amongst its benefactors and donors may be counted the Serb prince
Georgios Brancowicz and Princess Anna Philanthropini. Aid was also provided in the form of considerable
sums of money to help it in the troubles that came with subjection to the Turks by Vasiliki,
wife of Ali Pasha of Ioannina.
